UN Announces 17 New Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations adopted 17 new Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that build upon the eight Millennium Development Goals that it adopted in 2000 and which expire at the end of this year. RME COO Olivier Ceberio said; “2 of the 17 goals will have a direct impact on RME’s business development activities going forward and we’re very pleased to see that there is an increasing recognition that clean water and clean energy issues are of primary importance to improving global health and wefare.” The two relevant SDGs and select underlying targets are as follows: Goal 6: “Ensure access to water and sanitation for all” Target #1: By 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all; Target #2: By 2030, expand international cooperation and capacity-building support to developing countries in water- and sanitation-related activities and programs, including water harvesting, desalination, water efficiency, wastewater treatment, recycling and reuse technologies

Goal 7: “Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all” Target #1: By 2030, increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix; Target #2: By 2030, expand infrastructure and upgrade technology for supplying modern and sustainable energy services for all in developing countries, in particular least developed countries, small island developing States, and land-locked developing countries, in accordance with their respective programs of support
