RME is located in a region with a high concentration of ocean engineering and ocean sciences talent including: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Rhode Island (URI), University of New Hampshire (UNH), University of Maine, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), UMASS Dartmouth, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI), and dozens of companies that manufacture high-tech instruments used in ocean observation systems and that provide a wide range of sophisticated marine services. In addition, with funding obtained from the Department of Energy and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the Marine Renewable Energy Coalition (MREC) has become a regional center of excellence for the marine renewable energy industry.
